a shrill shriek follows me

My house is haunted by a demonic talking skull

but no one believes me

because it’s wrapped in human flesh and technically we’re dating.

This piece was curated with the explicit permission of my real-life girlfriend who asked I clearly state that I do not actually think she is an evil talking skull, and that I love her very, very much.

  1. As a previously described demon, I take great offence to your post. We don’t shriek, we gently make others aware of our presence by presenting them with differing levels of urgency. It appears that the level of urgency needed in your case must be Very high indeed. For I’m sure, your likkle demon has use delicate persuasion in the past that fell on unresponsive ears.
Grrrrr moment over. This one tickled my fancy.

  2. Hilarious – although my sympathies are with your girlfriend. Hahaha. Being described as a ‘demonic talking skull’ won’t exactly earn you Brownie points now, will it? I hope she gets plenty of flowers and lots of hugs to compensate! 🙂

  3. Eric, such beautiful lines! I have tried to translate it in Hindi (just a mere 1.3 billion people speak it). I hope I am not taking any liberties. Dedicated to you and your girlfriend!

    मेरा घर बसेरा है किसी बोलती आत्मा का
    पर मानता नहीं कोई
    क्योंकि वो लिपटी है चांदनी में
    और है मेरा बेहतर अर्ध

When literally translated it would mean:

My house is haunted by a spirit
But no one would believe me
Because she is wrapped in beautiful moonlight
    and represents my better half

  4. Well, this was just fantastic as all fuck…

I’d like to consider you my morning coffee…
And I hope you take that in the best way possible. ;D

  5. I skyped this to my husband, and he responded: “hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahhahahahhahaha”

Just thought I’d let you know.

  6. We’re all skulls wrapped in flesh. How about this?

Ezekiel 37 English Standard Version Anglicised (ESVUK)

    The Valley of Dry Bones
37 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley;[a] it was full of bones. 2 And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath[b] to enter you, and you shall live. 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling,[c] and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.
